Travis:

Today on five minute Mondays we'll dive into five new segment ideas that you can start incorporating into your podcast episodes. Welcome to five minute Mondays where we're bringing the best tips and strategies for building your podcast in five minutes or less. So if you're new here, consider subscribing. And today we're going to talk about five new segment ideas that can either freshen up your content or just inject new life into your podcast. And you might be asking, well, what is a podcast segment? So most podcasts are, is divide up their podcast episodes into sections or segments that provide the structure for each episode. It's just a way of kind of keeping things organized and being able to record different parts of the episode at different times and bring it all together into one cohesive piece. So a common episode might include an intro segment, an interview, maybe a sponsor, host, read ad, and an outro or conclusion. That's a very common, uh, segment structure. And by mixing and matching different segments within the architecture of your podcast episodes, you can experiment with new types of content and keep the fun in podcasting. Because after a while it's easy to feel like you're just going through the motions of every episode is just like the one before. It's good to change things up every once in a while and try new things. So here are five segment ideas that you can implement in your podcast segment. Idea number one is a helpful tips segment and this would be something practical that your listeners can implement right away. This might be life hacks like you figured out how to clean all of your teeth and half the time you know totally, totally helpful if that's something that you talk about on your podcast. Segment ID number two is to do a current news or latest news segment and this is where you can keep your audience up to date with what's going on as it pertains to your podcast content. So with buzz cast, which is one of the podcasts that we produce here Buzzsprout where we talk about podcasting and kind of what's going on in the world of podcasting, if there's like a breaking news, then we will cover that as podcast news in the beginning of the episode segment. Idea number three is to issue a challenge. Now this is a great idea if you want to take the engagement that your listeners have with you and with each other to the next level. So this is going beyond passive consumption of your podcast episodes into actually taking action. So if you want to issue a challenge, if you want to have a segment devoted to this, uh, I would encourage you to brainstorm what is a desirable outcome that you know your listeners want. Is it they want to lose weight, they want to save money, they want to break their highest score, whatever it is, whatever the outcome is that you know, your listeners want, create a challenge around achieving that outcome. And then you could just create a free Facebook group where people can share their journey, share their highs and their lows, their victories, their struggles, their obstacles, and where you can share yours as well. And then you all work together to achieve that outcome. And that's just a really cool way to engage with your listeners and to help them see tangible benefits as a part of being a podcast listener. Segment ID number four is to make a game. Uh, you know, one example of this would be to quiz your podcast guests. Uh, I was recently on a podcast called where the scary things are talking about horror films. Um, not because I'm a horror film junkie, but I was talking about Buzzsprout ironically, but they still sent me through the gamut of their horror pop quiz. Like how well do I know who are movies? And uh, and so they asked me different questions and it was like scorekeeping and all kinds of stuff. And even though I'm not a big horror junkie, uh, I still enjoyed it. I still had a lot of fun and it made some really cool content. So you can do stuff like that, quiz your podcast guests, make a game, do something fun. And then the fifth segment idea that you can implement in your podcast is doing a listener question and answer segment. So you can incorporate your audience into the episode by answering the questions you say, who submitted the question? You read off the question and then you answer it. And that's a really cool way to make people feel included and like they're contributing to the podcast episodes. And so you can gather questions in a Facebook group on a Google form or just via email as well. All of those will work. Now, if you want even more segment ideas beyond the five that we covered in this episode, we just published a blog post with 18 podcast segment ideas with links to examples for each one.
