Today on five minute Monday, I'll explain how to effectively promote your podcast using social media. Welcome to five minute Monday where we bring you the best tips and strategies for building your podcast in five minutes or less. So if you're new here, consider subscribing. Now, if you were to ask 10 podcasters what you should do to promote your podcast and find new listeners, 12 of them would say social media, and that just means everyone is saying, yes, you need to be on social media, but how exactly do you do that? How exactly do you use social media to promote your podcast and find new listeners? Well, here's what you do not do. Post a picture of your podcast artwork and say, listen to my podcast. That doesn't work. If you tried it before, you realize that doesn't work and it's because you're missing a key component, something that you need to ask yourself before you post anything on social media, you need to ask yourself what is in it for them?

What do people selfishly get out of sharing your podcast, social media posts? And here are four questions that people ask themselves before deciding to share your post on their personal page or tag a friend. And as you are hearing these four questions, ask yourself if any of these resonate with you or if you say, yeah, I totally do that subconsciously when I'm about to share something because we're, we're kind of getting into the psychology of how to get people to decide to share your posts. All right, so here's question number one. What does this image or video say about me? Basically, do I relate to this picture, this video in some way? Does it resonate with me personally? Question number two, does this Facebook post give me an opportunity to brag about myself? Does it give me an opportunity to look good in the view of people on social media?

Whether that's people that know me, my friends, or people that don't. Question number three, did I find it funny and this one to be the source of humor for my friends? Again, how can I brag about myself? How can I be excited about kind of where I am in the social pecking order by sharing this post? Did I find it funny and do I think other people will find it funny? And then question number four, does the message of this post resonate with my core values? Does this represent me? Do I want this associated with my identity and what I find to be important? Those are four questions that people ask themselves before deciding to share a post, deciding to share content on their personal page or tagging a friend. And so the reason those questions are important, the reason it's understood, it's important to understand those questions is because you want to create content with this in mind, right?

Whenever you create a piece of content, understand this is how people are interpreting it in the decision process of trying to figure out, am I going to share this? Is it worth sharing? So when you create either Buzzsprout soundbites or audio grams, or if you just share images associated with your podcast content, you need to ask yourself, can you answer one or all of these questions? Is it funny? Does it speak to core values? Does it remind them of someone that they know? Those are the things that you want to be intentional about when you're creating social media content because essentially what you're trying to do from a 30,000 foot level is you are harnessing the power of word of mouth. Most people listen to your podcast because someone they know and trusted told them it was worth listening to. That is by far the majority of your listeners and so with social media you are harnessing that word of mouth marketing on an international scale because you're using social media to expand your reach. You're, you're using social media to give the people that already listened to your podcast, a way of bragging about themselves, communicating something about who they are to their friends and making them look better in some way, shape or form, right? So when you can create intentional content, then you can feed that word of mouth marketing that everyone is looking for and ultimately answer the question, what is in it for me?
